LJ Idol IX - 26. Crabs in a Barrel (~400 words)

There is "us" and there is "them".

You are one of us, and we understand you, and we understand your life, your decisions, your motivations. Your downfalls we commiserate with (we've had ours), your small victories we celebrate (and hope we have some of our own soon).

You are one of us, but you have grown a big head, and have ideas above your station. You try to reach the sky and bring down the moon. You are ambitious, but life will bring you down soon, for did it not bring all of us down enough times that we stopped reaching so high, and wishing so big. When it does, we will help you get up and find you (smaller, fitting) feet again.

You are still out there, and growing bigger than us. But you are still one of us, aren't you. There are the same dirty socks in your closet and your breath is foul in the morning. It is simply taking you somewhat longer to fall than it does most of us. But it's okay. "They" say you've got talent. But come on, most of us believed they did as well, and where did it end us? Right back here.

You are growing bigger still. When will you fall? We are getting tired of waiting for your return home with your tail between your legs. When you fall, it will make us feel so much better about our pathetic little lives, so much better that our crashes were neither as spectacular nor as painful as yours will be. After all, you have grown bigger than us, so you might be looking down on what we are. It is not good to grow a big head, nor to disdain your old friends.

You try so hard to become one of "them". Were you even ever one of "us"? If you are of "them" now, you are not ours anymore, and you need not be protected. What have "they" ever done but look down upon us, despise us for the situation not of our own making, preach ways out of it that do not and will never work for us, offer offending charity? But you, one "them", you are vulnerable. We know your weak spots and your dirty little secrets. We will use them to drag you down, and revenge us against "them".

ConCrit is welcome.

I am not certain if it should be "are" or "is" in the first sentence.

Technically, "are" would be marginally more proper. I think "is" flows better though.

This is what I thought as well, "are" would be more proper because both "we" and "they" are plural pronouns. But I like it with "is" more.

Thank you.

"Is" works here because of the quotes. AW

I could understand/relate to this for some reason..the "us" versus "them" theme..well written..loved the gradual progression..Nice use of the prompt.

I like the progression too, the understanding and commiseration at the beginning and then later the resentment and vow of betrayal at the end.

All too sadly real!

What a perfect example of the human crab barrel. Well done with this.

Thank you. It was a reflection on the why's and how's of crab mentality. Made me feel unclean after I wrote this, as well.

Uh-oh, yikes. Hopefully the person who got out will keep being successful, or at least not need to go back to that sort of toxicity.
