LJ Idol IX - 0. Introduction

Hi. My name is Elena.

I am 32, Russian native speaker, engineer, technical translator, and graduate, as well as eternal, student.
Listen to music (Joe Dassin and Johnny Cash), read books, love live theatre (Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Stephen Fry and many others are awesome on stage), follow fandoms (Star Trek and Harry Potter), and blog about random things that interest me, sometimes dabbling into fiction and fanfiction.

This is my fourth season, and I am looking forward to the strange places Idol topics sometimes direct my thought process.

Bring it on!

Nice to meet you! I'm returning after a few seasons away, so you are all new to me!

Nice to meet you as well. I was in seasons 7, 8 and a, and yes, I think we did not interact then :).

Have a great season - I'll watch for your entries.

I competed in seasons 6 and 7 as FlashpaperTiger

Thank you.

I must confess that I do not remember you in season 7. I never could keep up with everyone's entries. :/

4 seasons! That's awesome!

I enjoy Johnny Cash's music as well, thanks to an old record my dad used to play of his when I was a kid. I loved the revival of interest in him that the film 'Walk The Line' ignited for Johnny Cash's life & music.

There is a debate (at least, among French music lovers) over which singers' songs are good mostly because of their text, and which catch your attention with their music.

Johnny Cash definitely does it with his words. So much said with so few of them.

Thank you, you as well.

How often do you go to theatre? I do not do so often at all, maybe 3 or 5 times a year.

Yaaaay! You remind me to write mine. I thought you said you weren't doing this?? Maybe I'm mistaken or you've changed your mind or something, but I always look forward to your entries :D. You're one of the few writers who writes something interesting for me 100 percent of the time.

Aww, thanks :D

I was on the fence for a while, because I have very little time, but then I decided to do it anyway. (The poll I have posted helped, but I already was more than 70% sure I would when I posted it.)

Fourth season! You competed in my first season, Season 5. Which others?

Also, I'm a Stephen Fry fan, too. Do you follow him on Twitter? He's always interacting with fans.

Um, I started in season 7, but I have seen you around a lot. Unbelievable that it is already fourth!

I do follow him, but I only look into the interactions that are made seen to all through .@someone'sName, I do not go to the main account page to see other conversations.

Thank you for asking to add me to your friendslist, and you have been added!

I relate to being an eternal student too, as you know! If you aren't learning, you aren't living!

Good wishes!

I was just indulging in Johnny Cash's rendition of Own Personal Jesus. Can't beat the man in black.

Fourth season, wow. Most of the people I've commented on are like me - their first season. You must have produced quite a lot of work!

Not that much, really, I never got further than week 10, but not because I was voted out, but because I could not write around real life consistently. I want to improve it this time, if I am not voted out before that, lol.

I'm alwasy impressed when I find out someone's bilingual, especially in languages with different alphabets. I also enjoy live theatre (specifically, musicals).

This is my second season of Idol, and I'm looking forward to getting back into it.

Knowing different alphabets makes you wonder what street signs you understand look like to those who do not. I always imagine them written in Hebrew. It is also quite efficient, my one trip to Israel showed that they have about as much information in English as we do in Russia, which is barely sufficient to navigate, haha.

I am also looking forward to all the unexpected topics. :)

Huh.
All these years I've "known" you, and it never sunk into my head that you were raised speaking Russian.

My family is Polish on both sides... but I never learned the language. Pity.

Re: Huh.
I hope that this means that it is not immediately obvious that I am not a native speaker? It is difficult to judge your own accent and how you appear to others.

I know a Belgian lady who is Flemish, but was forced to accept French as her mother tongue, because she was born shortly before WWII and her parents enforced its use both inside and outside the family so that their children experienced less antipathy because of their Germanic roots.

I hope your reasons were less dramatic (but could not help but speculate a little about the cold war).
