When my grandmother was carrying my mother, she was told that if she wanted to bear a healthy child, she would have to quit smoking, and she did, and never started again, even though all her life from that time on she really wanted to every time someone smoked nearby.

When my grandmother was carrying my mother, she was told that if she wanted to bear a healthy child, she would have to quit smoking, and she did. The year was 1941. My mother was born in January 1942 in Kansk where they'd evacuated grandmother, grandfather and his sister, my great aunt. Shortly afterward, grandmother and grandfather had to decide whether he was going to volunteer into the army for which he was too ill, or stay behind at the backbreaking works they had to do in Kansk. He went into the army, and grandmother, mother and great aunt stayed in Kansk and returned to Moscow some time in 1943.

I like your use of repetition to create drama and to create familiarity with the reader. Although, it is history, and it is written, it reads like oral history, and this gives it power.

Well done!

(So glad your playing the home game.)
