Let us do a little poll. Answer the first question first and only then read the second please.

Plastic bags were very different in the late 80s and early 90s. there were no large bags that we now use to carry things, and the smaller transparent ones were so much thicker you couldn't tear them with your fingers, and they also were not sold separately, but only when you purchased something.

Therefore, people washed them and kept them. Therefore, most households had bags with those saved bag to re-use. Washing bags, that was mildly disgusting, as was drying them in the kitchen, normally on that open-air little rack above the sink that kept various utensils. Every once in a while we also had a big bag washing day in the bathroom, followed by drying them out on the balcony. Those were the days.

Thankfully, this is no longer necessary, but we still keep a small amount of 'clean' bags for this purpose. The ones that you don't need to wash, such as those bread is packed in. We do not buy the 100 (or 500) packs of new bags though.

— Do you have a bag of bags?

Yes
Нет — No
We used to have one, but no more
We don't have a bag, we have a drawer (or something else)
— What on Earth is a bag of bags?

— Do you wash old bags

Yes
Нет — No
We used to, but not anymore
We only wash the largest ones, or the ones we really need to reuse

I keep shopping bags to use as trash bags for the very small trash cans (the ones that are too small for even the four-gallon bags), for the cat's litter box, and sometimes for stuff I need to take somewhere -- like library books that need returning or gym clothes for changing. In the latter case I do check to see that the bag is clean, but I don't clean them -- if one is dirty I get another. In the former case, all I check for is holes.

I don't keep bread bags, but my mom used to, and she'll still take bags from me and reuse them if they're relatively clean. I don't recall ever washing them; for sandwiches we used them as-is, since they only had breadcrumbs in them and sandwiches were made with bread anyway. We did sometimes use some for shoe covers in the snow, but we threw them away afterward -- it didn't snow much where I grew up, so there was always time to save up more before the next snowfall.

Anyway, I have a (shopping) plastic bag of plastic bags on the back of the door to the bathroom with the litter box, and another one in the kitchen. When I bring home groceries, I put the bags without holes in the one in the kitchen, and when the litter box bag runs out, I carry the kitchen's bag of bags upstairs and start a new one in the kitchen. (Trash bags get taken from whichever bag of bags is closest.)

Thank you for commenting, it's always interesting to know how others deal with similar things :-) . It's curious, we have a lot of snow but nobody protects shoes with bags. We only sometimes sew covers from waterproof material for skiing shoes to avoid wet fit during long cross-country trips.

We also use shopping bags as trash bags, but it's more for convenience's sake: while there is a trash duct in our house, we live on the 2 floor out of 12, and the is sometimes so much garbage piled up, that we'd have to go a floor up to use it, and it's easier to chuck a bag into the trash cans in the street every other day.
