LJ Idol IX - LCI-4. Hair Shirt (~375 words)

Personal receipt for disaster

Day 01

Take on a moderately lengthy work assignment #1 with deadline on Day 28. Get acquainted with general outline of assignment #1.

Days 02–06

Shelve assignment #1 (I have a lot of time to go, a whole of four weeks!). Muck around online and with previous tasks.

Day 7

Remember assignment #1. Do tiny bits and pieces without any precise idea of the final product.

Day 10

Do more little things for assignment #1. Fail to think positively about it in the vein of "don't think about the problem, think about the solution".

Day 11

Accept a lesser assignment #2 with deadline on Day 25. Feel good about it, savour:
a) the future accomplishment of fulfilling the easier and more pleasant assignment #2;
b) the "legitimate" reason to push thoughts about assignment #1 further away for the time being.

Day 13

Concentrate on the easiness of assignment #2. Shelve it as well. Muck around online some more. Do other work and the most inconsequential parts of assignment #2.

Day 15

Accept a moderately time-consuming and urgent assignment #3 with deadline on Day 29. (If bad comes to worst, I will still have that extra day, and knowing I can work very efficiently if pressed, it should be enough.)

Day 16

Bask in:
a) the reason to further shelve assignment #1;
b) the newly coined legitimate cause to further shelve assignment #2;
c) the future accomplishment of assignment #3.

Day 20

Remember the coming deadline of assignment #2. Start actively pushing thoughts about it out of the mind by doing more of the smaller things concerning assignments #3 and, grudgingly, some more ground work for assignment #1.

Day 25

Not finish assignment #2. Start frantically pulling it together in barely acceptable quality.

Day 27

Pull together assignment #2. Attempt to work on assignment #1 and assignment #3 at once. Have a minor anxiety attack. Stop doing work-related things. Force self to relax.

Day 28

Slowly, very slowly return to assignment #3. Finish it on the tick of the clock on Day 29.

Day 30

Be left with at least 30% of assignment #1 still unfinished. Extend its deadline.

Rinse and repeat ad nauseam.

ConCrit is welcome.

While the above is a tongue-in-cheek exaggeration, it certainly feels that way sometimes.

This is how I finish everything, so I empathize. (Amazing how clean my room gets when I have schoolwork due.)

The last comment cracked me up. Yes, mine does as well sometimes :-) . Thank you.

This made me smile!

This is how I would naturally work! but I really hate the stress of not finishing things so I try really hard to get things done early! I'm not saying I manage to though...as reckless_blues said, it's amazing how tidy my house is too when I'm supposed to be doing something else!

Haha, I am "glad" I am not the only one with this problem.

The worst part of it that nothing I have tried so far to break myself out of this vicious circle works more than a couple of times.

Oh, yes. I feel you on this one. Especially where my "novel" is concerned. Poor novel, doomed to perpetual shelfdom.

Thank you.

*reaches for the shelf and pulls novel closer* ^_^

Hahahaha,yes! Very relatable :)
I actually need deadlines though or I tend to let things slide permanently! And then I procrastinate, panic, and finally try to get in *before* the date because I have a fear of leaving things to the last minute that wars with my fear about finishing things at all.

You're lucky that deadlines work for you, even if they make me panic. I almost always find ways to finish my tasks after their deadlines, even those that seem to be relatively 'hard'.

Thank you.

^^^Sounds like my kid, except she neither fears or panics over last minute assignments! I think she likes/needs the challenge of waiting until then to complete whatever task there is! She'd do the research and outline fast enough and let everything else go. She pulled many an all nighter to finish.

I'd wake up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, see the light from under her door, and hear her pounding away at the keyboard.

Miss hearing that.(sigh) :)

I do this as well, especially for Idol, because its deadlines come at 4 a.m. our time. It's been my saving grace though, I can come home from work, take a bath and finish it up with at least an hour to spare, lol.

I used not to panic as well, but when I pile several assignments one on top of the other, sometimes it happens.
