LJ Idol: Exhibit A - Week 1 - Am I crazy?

"Dear Mummy,
Please hug Fatty and Tuney for me. I miss you all lots."

Am I crazy? What have I done sending my little girl away to serve at the inn? She is not yet 30 years old, and has to work so hard she can not even write us often, here, "some times my fingers shake in the evening if I hold even a quill". But what choice we had, take neighbour Proudfoot's offer for her to be maid at Red Dragon or do the same at Mrs Lobelia's, and that boy of hers... the way he looks at my girls gives me the shivers. Thank goodness he is of age next year, and every proper and self-respecting hobbit should well be thinking of taking a wife by the time he is 33. No, Marigold is best where she is for now. Neighbour Proudfoot may have a temper and a lot of work for her, but he at least does not shrill at nothing like Mrs Lobelia does.

Hm, "dropped a mug", oh, Goldy. - "Good market at Bayswater square two days ago." We should've come to see her then, but Fatty was so sick after Ceriadoc's birthday party. - Mrs Proudfoot said she's doing well despite the mug. That's my girl, Marigold.

Now what's this,

"Dearest Mummy,
you told me to write everything to you, but please, please do not tell Mrs Lobelia, you know how she goes on about him. Mr Proudfoot sent me to Mary's for eggs today, and the strangest thing happened. I saw Uncle Bo running through Bayswater, hatless! But if that is strange, for when does he run not on our birthdays? he went and met a dwarf at the bridge! A dwarf Over the Hill! I have never seen one in my life, have you, Mummy? That dwarf was tall, and wore a blue cloak. Oh, and he was so old, and grey, and his beard, I swear, it swept the floor. Do you know why Uncle Bo ran like this, to meet a dwarf, Mum? He is nice, but is this why Mrs Lobelia does not like him, because he runs away to meet Outlanders? I like Uncle Bo lots, does he really do it often?
Your loving daughter, Goldy."

Oh, baby, was it really Cousin Bilbo you have seen? He is such a respectable young hobbit, so much like his good memory father Bungo, too.

What times are we living in! Dwarves out in the Shire!

"Fred, Petunia! Put your hats on, we're going to visit with Uncle Bilbo!"

ConCrit is welcome, especially from those who have not read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

I wonder if I've managed to make it independent enough of Tolkien's story.

It was cute, but I'm not sure that I would have been able to enjoy it as much if I wasn't already a Tolkien fan and having fun with the references.

Looking back, I might have written too little action for those who have not read the book. They could find this boring. Hm. I will look into it more if I am tempted to write another fanfic.

Thank you :).

I did not intend to write this at forst, but the other ways to turn the topic suddenly appeared trite. :)

I read The Hobbit ages ago but I don't remember it that well, and I have not read/seen any of the LotR books/movies. (I may lose nerd cred for that, but I've just never been able to get into them.)

I could tell that this was from the Tolkien universe, and though there were parts that were confusing, I thought it was very cute overall!

Thank you!

Next time, I will try to be more explicit when writing fanfics, since I intend them for everyone, and not only fans of the book :).

this fits so wonderfully into Tolkins world.
This from one who has not one read (a few times) An Unexpected Journy AKA the Hobbit and the Lord of the rings but the companion books The Simerildon 1 and 2

Thank you. I was also wondering if it would seem like nothing too interesting happened in it to those who have not read it.

Oh. My God. I think I just nerdgasm'd. :DDD

You did fantastic, by the way, in capturing the essence of good respectable hobbits. This comes from an obsessive Tolkien fan (no, not one of the ones who think they're more elfy than others or who drool over Orlando Bloom-one of the nerdy ones who tries to collect every single book in every single cover imaginable and tries to sponge up all the little bits and pieces and snippets of story from books first, then MAYBE movies).

WELL done. :)

THANK you :).

I am glad I did not mix up my details. I also love the books and re-read them many times, but not quite obsessively :)

I liked this -- it always seems there must be so much more going on than what we get in the books. I would have liked perhaps a little more about the protagonist herself; she seems quite an interesting hobbit, really.

I might write more about her, if the topic is right.

Thank you :). I also always wish there were much more to Tolkiens novels, thick as they already are.

Hobbit fanfiction! Cool! I enjoyed the theme of living in a world with changing values.

Yes, I have tried to show how the daughter is about to start doubting her Unlce Bo, solely from the force of suggestion :).
