LJ Idol Exhibit A - Week 0 - Introduction

Bill from John Wyndham's Day of Triffids kept a journal which was "a mixture of diary, stock list, and commonplace book". This is how I like to regard my blog, a mixture of shiny odds and ends that catch my attention ranging from rants on similarities in obscure books and linguistic gimmicks to to detailed accounts of everyday events to sometimes fanfiction, short poems and even fiction. This is also how my LJ Idol entries have been in the past. And this is how my life is now, with no fixed goal or even working routine.

These are some of the points of interest that may find their way to the contributions of this contestant:
- snatches from life of an ordinary Russian;
- obvious (to the learned) discoveries of someone who learns languages but has had no structured education in them;
- short bits of science fiction and new takes on old local legends;
- memories of the past not only her own but also shared by friends and relatives;
- the hard life of a fan whose two idols are far far away, and all others only "just" abroad;
- and others she herself does not yet expect.

My name is Elena, or Helen. I am 31, speak English and French, work as an engineer, have by now translated one book from French into Russian and one from Russian into English, and forgotten half the stuff I need for my main profession. Love British movies and theatre, and French and American songs. Have a dog, a brother and a nephew. Wear glasses and am overweight.

And I am now desperately trying to meet the deadline typing this from a hotel in Tel Aviv, during one of my too many trips abroad in the last couple of years and the first one ever to Israel. This, instead of packing for my return flight tomorrow afternoon, for which I will have to be at the airport more than 3 hours early, for they say passing the security in this country is quite an experience.

See you!

No worries, you're good. There's still 2 1/2 hours left, or so.

I am curious as to why the trips abroad are wearing on you, being a woman who loves (but does not get) to travel...for work, I am guessing? That said, I envy your location in Tel Aviv. I'd love to visit. :)

Thank you! I'd thought the deadline was 7 p.m. EST, not 9, and being in another timezone, worried if I calculated it correctly.

Thank you for pointing out I did not explain that point well enough. What I meant was, they are wearing on me financially. I travel on my own, and it seems that all I do in between is save up for further trips (can afford that right now, since I do not have many familial obligations or debts).

Thank you! The trip back went amazingly smoothly, I passed through security in Israel very swiftly, and the same happened back in Moscow.

Yes. Do you like it as well? It made me somewhat paranoid when I read it as a teen. Kept waiting for something like that to happen, a little, many years since. :)

It's good to see you back in Idol. Are your trips abroad for work or fun?
Jan. 23rd, 2013 08:47 pm (UTC)

Thank you!

Are you actually Russian? And speak English and French as additional languages? Wow.

Glad you made the deadline, and are back again this round. Hope the journey went smoothly!
Jan. 23rd, 2013 03:39 pm (UTC)
Yes, I am not a native speaker of either French or English. :)

Thank you, it went very well indeed considering the horror stories on the times it take to pass security when flying out of Israel. They were very thorough, very professional about it, and very quick. I think it took them less to do more than on any of my other trips.

Good luck! Airport security is the worst.
Jan. 24th, 2013 02:40 pm (UTC)
Yes, because you never really know what to expect. Thank you!
