I have only one thing to say regarding the LJ "like" feature (that thankfully does not show in my design):

if you respect me at all, you will NEVER use it on my entries. Better no comments at all.

Я могу только одно сказать по поводу ЖЖ-лайков (которые, к счастью, в моём дизайне не видны):

если вы меня уважаете, вы НИКОГДА не станете их мне ставить. Лучше никаких комментариев.

LOL well I'm glad that's out of the way :p. I have my list set to the old friends page, and that doesn't have the like feature.

I'm not quite sure what to make of it... I wish actually it could completely copy facebook and allow us to respond with different emotions : anger, heart, sad, etc. I'd totally love that.

Well, there are some smiley elements in the subject line (click the little smiley face next to it to call them out). Not many though.

Thanks for the warning.
I hadn't even noticed the feature until you mentioned it. I'll admit that I've used it on FB... but I consider LJ to be distinctly different from FB, so I don't particularly like the idea of it trying to copy FB.

Re: Thanks for the warning.
I use it on Facebook and Tmblr as well, but LJ is different, yes.

Glad to see you back as I've always enjoyed your writing! Will respect your loathing off the heart icon! If I forget, feel free to kick me!. Peace~~~

Aw, thank you :-)

I am glad to see you are participating as well. Some of your Idol entries "stayed with me", and I love I.

Noted! I wonder though, why the hatred for this feature?
Nov. 2nd, 2016 02:54 pm (UTC)
Not quite hatred, but certainly strong aversion.

It is lazy and redundant: if you follow me, this means that, in general, you are interested in what I write. So it a particular entry does not make you want to comment, "liking" it does not really tell me anything.

It can be argued that "liking" means that while the entry is interesting, you do not have anything to say about it. Or that saying something feels awkward. But seeing as I put work and thought in my entries, "liking" them is not enough.

If comments are allowed, this it means I don't mind them being awkward.
(Oh, my. Someone can probably "like" an entry with switched off comments? That would be horrible and disgusting.)

It tells you that you have readers, though! I find it quite useful, because now if people on my flist don't have the opportunity to comment, they can like my post, and I'll see that they're still there reading. Whereas before, I wouldn't get any indication at all that they had even seen the post.

I also like the idea of liking entries to keep as a favourite list type of thing. I never really made use of the Memories function (it's way too fiddly), but with the activity stats I can easily go back to entries of particular interest.

It's bizarre to me that so many people use "but people will stop commenting!!!!" as an argument for why this is supposedly a bad feature to implement. Commenting is one of LJs best features, long time users here know that, and love it. I strongly, strongly doubt we'll suddenly stop commenting on each other just because of the little heart icon. It might help attract new users, though. Since the like feature is something they recognise from other places.

Ah, ah, but polls do the same. When I start wondering where everyone is, I post one of those, and it is an easy and fun way for many to participate.

I use favourites on Twitter the way you describe LJ likes uses :-) (and do not accept their 'rebrending' into likes).

And I agree that likes would hardly noticeably diminish commenting where it counts, in ordinary people's LJs and not popular accounts.

Hmm, okay, I will keep your opinion of likes in mind if there is a long stretch without other communication between us, but I hope it will not come to it feeling necessary.
